Moscow has advertised the capabilities of its new Beriev A-100 in the air early warning and control (AEW & C) aircraft as being much better than national and international rivals.

The Russian Ministry of Defense made in a recent release the claim about launching preliminary flight tests awaiting acceptance by the army of the country.

"The A-100 has been developed in connection with the arrival of new classes of targets and the creation of new generation fighter aircraft," said the Ministry of Defense. "Its capabilities surpass both domestic and foreign counterparts, including the [Boeing] E-3 aircraft of the US Air Force. "

During a flight on 8 February, gun manufacturer Rostec said, the crew assessed various flight and technical parameters, including navigation, airframe stability and "communication algorithms between the cockpit crew and the ground control station".

The aircraft, which completed its first flight at the end of 2017, is equipped with an active electronically scanned array radar produced by the Russian Vega Radio Engineering Corporation. The type has digital flight controls and uses glass cockpit avionics.

"There are about 20 tons of unique electronic equipment on board this aircraft," says Anatoly Serdyukov, director of the Rostec aerospace cluster.

"The new generation of flying radar combines the most advanced developments in aviation, radar and information technology, and only a few countries in the world produce this type of aircraft, while the level of the latest Russian complex can be considered unsurpassed."

The A-100 is derived from the Ilyushin II-76-based MD-90A transport. It will replace the fleet of Beriev A-50s from Moscow and the upgraded A-50U; also based on the Il-76.
