It consumes as much electricity as a small town and is as complex as an Airbus A380: a heavy-ion accelerator, one of the largest and most expensive devices of medical technology that is intended to destroy brain tumors. This type of cancer is particularly difficult to treat, because the malignant cells are very close to important brain areas that should not be affected. In the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center, scientists are able to shoot cancer cells and hit the DNA of the tumor cells with incredible precision and shoot them. We show the researchers at the approximately 120 million euro accelerator, which with their radiation gun bring heavy ions to 75% of the speed of light.
