THE INTERNATIONAL TENERIFE MEMBER IN SANTA CRUZ MARCH 27, 2007
On Sunday, March 27, 1977, a tragic accident occurred at Los Rodeos airport on the Canary Island of Tenerife. A Boeing 747 from Dutch airline KLM crashed into another of the same type as the PanAm Airlines. In the air catastrophe, 583 people died, 61 survived.
Thirty years later, on March 27, 2007, an international event was held for the first time on the initiative of the Foundation of Relatives of Victims of Air Accidents Victims of Los Rodeos de Tenerife, to remember the greatest catastrophe in the history of aviation.
The international commemorative act consisted of two parts; A commemorative meeting and the inauguration of an international monument.
The commemorative meeting was held in the auditorium of Tenerife, in the capital Santa Cruz and the monument was inaugurated in the Mesa Mota, in the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The ceremonies were attended by survivors, relatives of victims and people involved in the accident in the Netherlands and the United States, as well as Spaniards who had been involved in the catastrophe and rescue work.
