Ethiopian Airlines, formerly Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL) and often referred to as simply Ethiopian, is Ethiopia ’s flag carrier and is wholly owned by the country’s government. EAL was founded on 21 December 1945 and commenced operations on 8 April 1946, expanding to international flights in 1951. The firm became a share company in 1965, and changed its name from Ethiopian Air Lines to Ethiopian Airlines. The airline has been a member of the International Air Transport Association since 1959, and of the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) since 1968. Ethiopian is a Star Alliance member since December 2011.
Its hub and headquarters are at Bole International Airport in Addis Ababa, from where it serves a network of 82 passenger destinations —19 of them domestic— and 23 freighter ones. Ethiopian flies to more destinations in Africa than any other carrier. It is one of the fastest-growing companies in the industry, and is among the largest on the African continent. It is also one of the few profitable airlines in the Sub-Saharan region. The airline ’s cargo division was awarded The African Cargo Airline of the Year in early 2011.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a long-range, mid-size wide-body, twin-engine jet airliner developed by Boeing Commercial Airplanes. Its variants seat 242 to 335 passengers in typical 3-class seating configurations. It is Boeing’s most fuel-efficient airliner and the world’s first major airliner to use composite materials as the primary material in the construction of its airframe. The 787 was designed to be 20% more fuel efficient than the 767 it is replacing. The 787 Dreamliner’s distinguishing features include mostly electrical flight systems, a four-panel windshield, noise-reducing chevrons on its engine nacelles, and a smoother nose contour. It shares a common type rating with the larger Boeing 777, allowing qualified pilots to operate both models, due to related design features.

  1. I've been in both kenya airways and Ethiopian airlines business class and the services on Ethiopian airlines are way better than that of Kenya airways

  2. Ethiopian seems to be beating South African Airways a lot. Despite both of them being part of star alliance. SAA's A340s are dated with old seats and IFE's. Ethiopian has much more modern aircraft like the 787 and A350 which have better fuel efficiency and can hence fly a longer distance. So it seems SAA has a lot of catching up to do if they want to compete.

  3. Finally An Ethiopian airline review, luckily it was buy you air clips i think Ethiopian Airlines is great . WHat do you think Air-clips???

  4. I flew Ethiopia Air on this particular aircraft model in Feb of 2015 (Abuja Nigeria – Sweden). Take-off, Mid-Flight, Landing – were all near quiet.. At a point i was wondering if the engines were still powered.. Some smaller planes have 4 engines, but this large aircraft is powered by 2 very very massive General Electric engines/plants..

I still have photos of all 4 meals served aboard the flight, and i wish i could share the photos here. The red wine was excellent..

In-flight entertainment was awesome.. The headphones were "On-point", not too much bass, and not too much of treble either.. I saw Denzel Washington's EQUALIZER for the first time, as well as several other educative and enlightening documentatries.

When i disembarked, i concluded that small and medium sized planes were "Not just it".. Its that feeling you get when you drive a BMW or Mercedes and being confident of taking a curve at 130 140km/hr – that balanced, quiet, and less bumpy feel..

Took a connecting flight from Sweden to Finland next day on arrival, and behold, it was a smaller plane – I could feel the impact of the clouds and air on the plane's aerodynamics as it charged through.. Take off and landing were ok, but not as smooth.. I had been spoilt as a result of my previous flight..

Ethiopian Air, ensure you keep up with, and improve on existing standards.. And lest i forget, the female flight crew were …….

    Beautiful..

  7. Menilik, Ethiopian flies from Europe to Ethiopia at night to make the flights convenient for connecting passengers to other destinations in Africa and the middle east. The night flights will arrive from all over the world to Addis Abeba , Ethiopia early in the morning then passengers can connect a few hours later around 10AM local time.

  8. Thanks for sharing… Ethiopian Airlines has great service and a decent J class product in their newer planes such as the 777 and the 787. How did you find the food?
